Jun 28, 2016Gravel is always going to be better as a subgrade fill than soil. I suppose if your local soil is non-expansive clay, it can be used but remember it will also have to be compacted, the cost of which will probably negate any savings over rock. If the clays are expansive, or it's loamy soil, forget it.
Pour out enough gravel to come about inch shy of the top of the edging. Rake the gravel out evenly, making sure none of the landscape fabric shows through. Landscape around the path with flowerbeds or sod. Maintain the path by occasionally raking it smooth and refilling it with more gravel, as necessary.
I have a couple of ideas on binding the gravel in a gravel driveway together so it doesnt get rutted and wander out of the driveway. I wanted to bounce them off of you all and see what you think. Currently all I have is a dirt road thats about 400 feet long that is full of potholes, dust, a few rocks and, when it rains, a whole lot of mud.
